Because I’m very poor and Amazon is cheap? Like, if you don’t want products produced with human suffering you have to pay a pretty sizable premium.

Maybe you’re an exception, but how much of the consumer goods you buy do you actually know how ethically sourced they are?

Happened to me, too. Ordered GPU from Amazon some time ago, was supposed to be on the way, then got a mail that “something happened” with it. We were asked if we wanted to cancel the order, but at that time the price was more than 60% over the price I ordered it for, so I did not cancel.

Later on, they got new stock, and the price actually dropped below my order price, so I placed another order, actually got the card, and finally cancelled the old order.

If you need to compute on the GPU (for example, to be able to run Davinci Resolve), getting that to work on Linux is much easier with nvidia than with AMD. For playing games and stuff, AMD is fine and probably a bit better/easier. But if you need to run computation on your GPU under Linux, nvidia is the way to go.

      (Speaking from experience.)

ROCM has been growing a lot, I can’t think of anything that hasn’t worked with opencl and rocm recently, so any card since the 7000 series is completely viable.

In my experience, I could not for the life of me get opencl working on Linux. Tried drivers from a bunch of different sources, installed and configured different ways … each time, I’d go through a bunch of trouble reinstalling, only to finally end up with the same issue of it just not working ‘no opencl device detected’, etc, etc. Eventually got sick of it and tried an nvidia card instead … which worked perfectly on the first try once I installed nvidia’s drivers.

Granted, that was a few years ago. Maybe the driver software for AMD cards has improved since then. But I’m definitely not going to go out and buy an AMD card just to test if anything has changed – not in this economy!

Yep, called it. Prepare to logon to BezosNet on your amzthin client with your eye scan and fingerprint and video (on at all times to keep The Children safe of course).

They will just ban your forms of payment for computer hardware so they own all the compute and information. Hold on to your books people.

Have fun trying to get every competitor to join you on this psychotic tactic. And if you are successful it preventing people from getting computers, you give people no reason to give a shit about these places that produce them. For America that is…

If they started banning people who buy lots of GPUs as a way of shutting down scalpers, that’s something I might be able to support…

As much as I dislike Amazon, this looks like 1 user having the issue. Tim Sweeney is on Bezos’ side and wants to rent compute time to us plebs. I doubt his canceled order of 2 GPUs means anything other than an attempt to get us to think he’s on our side. I think our future involves owning nothing and being happy, but that will probably be after Nvidia and Amazon collude to keep the hardware from us, not Amazon refusing to sell Nvidia’s latest tech.

It’s not an uncommon issue, but it’s also not unreasonable that the vendor supplying the card (not amazon) is fucking with end users as price changes come up.

Vendor buys a 32GB 5090 for $6500, you order the card for $7500 on Monday, the price on 5090’s explodes Tuesday morning and now the card is going for $9500. An ‘issue’ comes up with your order. they can take one person bitching about their bait and switch for 2 grand.

From the times I’ve had to order work hardware, I don’t think I’ve ever had any video cards that were actually sourced form amazon, it’s always a vendor.

No i don’t think so. Some time ago on one of Zitron podcast episodes the other guy noticed that one of GPU vendors started requiring ID for GPU purchases. Their guess at that time was that it’s about export controls
