Ukrainian president earlier rejected US call for Kyiv to stop bombing oil refineries, saying Moscow must first end attacks on energy infrastructure

Donald Trump has announced an energy ceasefire between Ukraine and Russia, apparently without consulting Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who said the deal to stop long-range attacks was “news to me”.

In a social media post, the US president claimed the two sides had reached an agreement. “Effective immediately, there is an ENERGY CEASEFIRE in the War between Russia and Ukraine. Both parties have agreed. Do not break it!” he wrote on Truth Social.

He offered no further details. Zelenskyy said he was surprised by the announcement but would agree to it if Vladimir Putin did the same. “If President Trump negotiated it with Putin – please tell us when the ceasefire begins. We are ready and we will accept it,” the Ukrainian president told the Axios website.

If you want Ukraine to stop bombing Russia there’s actually a really easy fix that they could implement tomorrow.

    Have Russia end their invasion.

Please continue to bomb russian oil and seize/sink their tankers. I’ll gladly pay increased fuel prices on my end.

Genuinely hoping the diesel exports from Russia, if they are even real, are targeted. I don’t want 300,000 gallons or whatever of diesel spilled from an environment perspective, but man would I be in favor of the pain pushing people to vote appropriately.

Zelenskyy shouldn’t offer to accept a Trump-brokered deal so readily given that Trump has no incentive to negotiate with Ukraine’s best interests in mind.

It won’t matter, Putin won’t accept it anyways. This has happened many times before. Zelenskyy knows how to deal with Trump.

He thinks he’s rich and can just “grab 'em”. He sees “dear leader” in the mirror. He’s just a kindergarten teacher receiving every gold star, bragging about acing the tests he writes and grades himself.

No, this is a good play. It’s all bullshit anyway, but it buys Zelenskyy some goodwill if he plays along. It also makes Trump look stupid when he doesn’t follow up. There’s literally no downsides. The only downside would be if it’s real and Putin actually follows it. Neither of these would happen though.

Not sure how this would be a downside, Ukraine would be happy to get an energy ceasefire going into the cold months

Fair. Maybe it wouldn’t be. Strategically, I think it’d be a negative for them though. They’ve had much more luck striking energy targets than Russia has. I can see the argument for it being a win no matter what too though.

It would help Ukraine if it were real. And it would damage Ukraine to refuse outright. So a conditional acceptance is the least bad choice. But I’m sure Zelenskyy knew that Putin would keep bombing, since that’s what he’s going to do until his owners decide he’s no longer useful.

He negotiated it in his head, and is probably surprised that his thinking doesn’t equal reality.
The man is completely delusional, he actually thinks he can make things real with his will!
When he claims “only I can fix that”, he actually believes it. Because he believes he is the only one with a mind strong enough to will it to happen.

This is a common phenomenon among for instance the very rich and highly positioned CEO’s and wall street traders, although generally to a smaller degree, like thinking they can influence how dice fall.
It is also common within religion, like thinking praying actually works, which again turns to things like prosperity gospel, something Trump apparently also believes is true.
And finally it is also something that tend to happen to narcissists.

Trump is all these things, and has been delusional about having “powers” for decades, and his progressing dementia is making it worse.

It’s the same mechanism that made Steve Jobs declined to have his cancer treated when it was discovered early enough to have a very high chance of success. He thought he could get rid of it himself somehow. When he finally realized he couldn’t, it was too late.

Almost certainly not. This is to shift attention from Iran for gas prices increasing I suspect. He’s going to say the reason prices have gone up is because Ukraine is bombing Russian refineries (it has technically had an effect), not because of his invasion of Iran. He’s going to say he signed a deal with Russia, but prices aren’t decreasing quickly because Ukraine broke the ceasefire that he made up.

Assuming I’m right, it’s actually a smart move. It only needs to be made because of a bunch of really dumb moves, but this would be smart. Most people, let alone most Americans, don’t have a firm grasp on any of this, so the truth doesn’t really have much power.

Trump’s in a pickle because he is helping Putin keep the oil price high while also promising low gas prices to Americans. So Trump has to constantly flap his jaw about deals without actually delivering anything.

It sounds like the idea was that there would be no attacks on energy infrastructure in particular, so not “partial” in the sense of quantity but rather in targets.

the world, both good and bad sides of it, already knows that every word from trumps mouth is a lie so it behooves us all to watch his actions and go by them rather than what he says
