It’s weird crime is a high priority issue when crime rates are low.

Yeah, indeed. All kinds of crime have been trending down for decades.

I remember telling a guy this back in the mid 00s. He was in disbelief. I told him that he really needs to turn off his TV, most especially Faux and local “news”. It’s ruining his brain.

I’ve heard from more than one person that they mistrust the FBI stats that say crime is low. None offered a data source saying otherwise.

Another source with different methodology does exist: the National Crime Victimization Survey. It also says crime is low.

A friend of mine’s dad lives in a nice suburb of DC. He heard on the “news” that “there was a drug deal” in the city, so he went and bought a gun “to protect his daughter”. He didn’t take any classes on gun safety, and I would be surprised if he stored it safely.

This is the level many people operate at. Emotional flailing.

I suspect it’s a weird inverse of survivorship bias. Just using murder as an example, 170 years ago my ancestor killed a military officer and got a 10 dollar bounty, 70 years ago my kinsmen buried bodies in the Mojave and no one took notice, nowadays someone who kills 3 random people outside of a mass shooting is very irregular and worthy of notice. You notice a speck of dirt when something is otherwise spotless.
