Left end - “by taking our jobs” Right end - “by grift”
Why not both? Automation isn’t good for the economy if it leads to mass poverty, and the current people in power in most countries don’t seem particularly motivated to implement UBI, or anything else to mitigate that issue.
Because as far as I’m concerned, the supposed automation of jobs is a scapegoat for companies doing layoffs just to get rid of headcount from over-hiring.
That’s definitely something they’re doing, and they’re clearly going for it before the technology is actually ready, but I don’t believe that there’s just nothing there, especially considering that the technology is still relatively young.
That said, IMO the west has basically been living in a post-scarcity society for several decades, the majority of jobs are unnecessary (or even a net-negative) for the functioning of society beyond providing people with incomes (which could be immediately replaced by UBI). The economy as we know it is artificial / basically made up. It’s just that automation/grift is upsetting the previous order and governments are doing nothing to prevent the negative fallout.
Personally I think the technology is hitting the point of diminishing returns.
As to your second point, I agree that most jobs are bullshit and a real UBI would be perfect if individuals realized it would benefit them personally too. I’m not holding my breath though.
There’s this underlying assumption that every technology just gets infinitely better forever, like how people in the 1950s thought we’d be commuting to work by jetpack by now.
Every technology gets better at making money though, when money is the single motivation. Make jetpacking to work somehow more profitable than driving and you’re halfway there.
But it’s not more profitable than driving, and similarly, LLMs are not more profitable than preexisting technologies.
But there’s just this assumption that profit is inevitable, as if jetpacks and LLMs are going to be profitable any day now…
LMM’s make a ton of money for Nvidea, politicians, construction companies, AI interest groups that plan to use them before they collapse. You’re thinking too narrow minded about the profit. Systemically, it’s moving more money around than a lot of other things put toghether. That’s pure capitalism, just reacting to it’s environment of stagnation and inflation. We gave it a way out, falsley, but it doesn’t really care.
Moving money around is not the same as making money. Yes, they’re all trading money back and forth, and the money supply keeps increasing, and some companies are getting rich off of it. That’s literally not profit, though.
In fact, if the money supply keeps increasing without creating anything, it will cause inflation - which we are seeing.
Reality exists regardless of what the market wants.
Yeah, kinda. I think the amount of use cases for LLMs that are actually worth the money and energy use are substantially narrower than LLM companies try to make society believe, but they do exist (e.g. code analysis in software development, language translations to some degree, malware+scams, plus other machinelearning stuff like facial recognition tech)(some of these are a net negative to society).
