Michigan Democrat Abdul El-Sayed’s former opponent in the U.S. Senate primary, Haley Stevens, stunned party officials Sunday by endorsing Republican Mike Rogers after Democratic tensions boiled over days before the election that could determine the balance of power on Capitol Hill.

Stevens endorsed Rogers after attending a Detroit church service with him. The remarkable show of support for Donald Trump’s backed candidate in the tightly contested race comes after she was uninvited to a joint event the same day with El-Sayed, who defeated the congresswoman by a slim margin in the August primary.

“Our Democratic nominee for Senate said I was no longer welcome in his campaign and that I should stay away,” Stevens said video announcing the endorsement. “And he’s right. And that’s why I am endorsing Mike Rogers for the United States Senate today.”

I’m very confused on what’s happening here. Not that another establishment not-Democrat went full mask off, but of the odd timeline of this.

So this woman lost the primary months ago to Abdul El-Sayed. She stays quiet and/or pushes milquetoast support for the progressive Democrat for those months, even though it’s clear she’s full on AIPAC supported and has a conservative husband.

Then these last few days, well after a lot of Michigan already voted with early polls, she decides “fuck it we ball” and outwardly and directly decides to endorse the GOP candidate on the ballot? Did something happen behind the scenes? Did she have a mental break? The strategy makes no sense from a sabetour perspectives behind the scenes (she went mask off too early… 2 days too early) nor from a campaign perspective (she went mask off WAY too late for it to matter for the GOP candidate). This can’t have been strategic.

I think it has a lot to go with the new polls that came out today

Centrists and establishment dems have been seeding the narrative for a while that an AES win would be a lot closer than what a middling and corporate/zionist friendly candidate would have done in his place, but that’s hard to argue when he’s showing a 15 point lead in his race as compared to D+10 races in other competitive states

Steven’s is making herself the villain of the week in order to cut down his lead and undercut any potential narrative about left populism being electable in 2028

Remember, this is not real news. She’s a loser. She lost. She means nothing, and her opinion means nothing. And that’s OK, no worries, it happens in politics… But the pundits want to make it an issue so voters forget about the issues that matter (health care, education, clean water, ending wars, etc.).

When I stopped laughing because El-Sayed has inadvertently flushed out another pretender just by being himself, I realized I wasn’t surprised.

Stevens’ fiance has been stumping for Mike Rogers all along, and while people of differing politics can and do get married, it takes a LOT of passion to go out and actually work for a candidate, which he did and still is. For me, it’s not so much a red flag as a question mark.

But then there was the ad that attacked her own side, and its follow-up of her desperately trying to make something out of nothing, low-key harassing El-Sayed until he simply disinvited her to his upcoming event.

And now, the day of his event and standing outside, she’s thrown off her cloak and shown her real allegiance.

If you look at what she has said and what she has brought, it’s pretty clear she was only ever a Republican in a Dem suit anyway.

tensions boiled over days before the election

Yeah, no. That’s a very fact neutral, implied “both sides” way of saying she kept trying to throw El-Sayed off his game until he threw her out, and now she’s just attacking openly. Not a lot has really changed here.

Now I’m wondering how much cash I’d bet on finding out her campaign was planned to this end all along: to either win and then switch sides, or to lose explosively before the election in such a way that it cratered her opponent’s chances.

In the end it doesn’t look like she’s succeeded in anything at all, beyond showing her own true colors.

The video on that article had a great response from El-Sayed at the end, when the press was asking about his response to questions about Stevens and if he knew about her endorsement ahead of time. He basically said he understands that getting answers like that it what drives clicks but ultimately it doesn’t matter at all, and that he wished the press would focus on issues the local electorate cares about like prices and wages.

Whether that’s severely limiting voting locations, hours, mail-in options, etc. there are millions of people that aren’t easily able to vote like they should and end up not voting as a result.

Man, you guys are trying real fucking hard. Known shitbag has sour grapes and turns and suddenly she represents 85% of the democratic party.

        1. Get Republicans and Neo-Nazis out.
        2. Fix Citizens United
        3. Fix the Neolib/Corporate part of the Democratic Party.

One comes first. Haley Stevens being a shitbag doesn’t change that.

I would love nothing more than for Republicans to be rendered irrelevant and for the two parties to be replaced by the DSA and the neolibs. Just be a little strategic in how you go about that. (I worry you are being strategic, and it’s not for the benefit of DSA.)

The problem with phrasing it like that, is the neoliberals can lose NY state party just like they lost the DNC.

“Establishment” is just who controls the party, which can be changed.

NY, Florida, Maine, California, there’s a bunch of state parties that neoliberals control. But as more progressive get elected, the more say they have in who leads those parties.

That election was held by the DNC under Jamie Harrison.

The chair Buden appointed, and then Harrison appointed Harris as the candidate.

The incoming chair saw that Harrison fucked it up, and said they were going to re run the vote.

Not campaign mind you, the ~400 voting members who had just voted for the chair and Hogg on the same ballot would just re-vote.

There was no reason for anyone to expect the result to change.

Hogg however, refused to sign a piece of paper that would have put him on the new ballot. He just refused to.

          That’s what actually happened.

And I can’t think of a reason why Hogg declined to put his name on the ballot, except he didn’t expect to win and didn’t want to win.

Because all he had to do to win again, was put his name on the ballot

Nice work! My only competitive election this year is in the House (Rob Bresnahan is going down). But thanks for voting for sanity!

People like her are everywhere unfortunately. They’re drawn to the attention, the power, the influence. It’s so clear this wasn’t a principled position for her given three months ago…

For her, it’s all personal. She apparently thinks she has the authority to make demands of El-Sayed because she barely lost to him in the primary. If she wants to not go out and campaign with him, fine. But this is pretty clearly a “I told him to do something, he didn’t do it, so I’m going to spit in his face” type situation.

Maybe she truly doesn’t realize how bad she fucked up, but her whole career in politics is done, all because the actual nominee didn’t acquiesce to the loser’s demands and she decided to make a big show of it and cheer for the opposing team she previously decried as extreme.

Democrats see her as a traitor, Republicans see her as useful for 2 days and then they’ll discard her. She’s just done.

No. It’s really not. Voting in primaries is the easiest action you could take. You could also get even more involved during primary season, throwing your hat into the ring, or volunteering for a candidate that shares your value. Outside of election season, you could get involve in your local democratic party. You can also put external pressure on the DNC, by working in/on groups with voters the DNC courts/expects. If your elections are using RCV or something similar, you could even make the D candidate not your top choice, as long as they remain above the R candidate. There’s SO MUCH you can do beside “hope”.

True, plenty you can do, and this is a good list.

My point is that changing the democratic party is the only hope

The DNC will never be a home for leftists, if it ever was. I’ll vote in Democratic primaries, and for plenty of Democrats on the ticket, but the DNC is routinely an embarrassment.

Never Say Never. It’ll be incredibly tough cuz obviously we’re never going to have the financial backing that let’s say the Tea Party did. But it is possible to take over a party from inside. And in American politics it’s pretty much your only option, barring that massive funding like I said.

I don’t disagree. In many other situations, I do prefer to push from change from inside. In this case, tho; I feel my resources are better spent toward organization that might replace it. I certainly won’t fault you for making a different decision, but the DNC has either ignored, insulted, or attacked me and the people I care about enough that it feels irredeemable to me. Tho, maybe in the future them (or persons like yourself) will convince me otherwise.

Then you might as well give up. I believe that the party is in the process of changing, and we just need to keep encouraging people like El Sayed and pushing for those types of politicians.

The DNC isn’t some mystical being that can’t be changed. We have to fight for the change.

In this case, I’m for replacement rather than refinement. Working Families Party.

Also, more left-leaning parties would encourage all left-leaning parties to implement Approval or Ranked-Choice voting, preferably a Condorcet method and that would be a good thing.

In case you weren’t aware, WFP candidates will run under the Dem ticket sometimes as a strategic decision.

With the requirements some states have, its the sensible option. Its also one of the way to substantially alter the party OR increase the standing of WFP.

Just because there is a “D” there, we shouldn’t assume establishment. This is why knowing who is running and getting in at the primaries is so important.

That’s actually one of the reasons I really remembered the Working Families Party after I learned about it: they understand the only way you can wield political power to change things (hopefully for the better) is to first acquire political power. With the way our current system works in most cases, it better to do that by getting a candidate to win one of the major party primaries rather than challenging both major parties in the general. But, that can change as power shifts or depending on the introduction of voting systems better than FPtP.

They need power first, and a third part is never going to get that, just like this has NEVER WORKED INT HE LAST 80 FUCKING YEARS.

This is our very last chance to have a country and you’re pulling out the “actually a vote for Jill Stein would be a really smart thing for our democracy” shit?

Give me a break. Not ever ever falling for it again. Democrats have been leading way too far right since a bunch of Chamber of Commerce assholes got together and formed the DLC and now CAP and Third Way, and they have been pushing the party to the right since the early 1980s while posturing as the kindhearted progressives.

Enough is enough, we are taking OUR party back from the hands of corporate greed and you can go form a centrist party if you want. Democrats get called lefty socialist commies all the time for openly stating progressive positions while rarely ever following through. It’s time to follow through.

This is the sams as giving up. We have a 2 party system whether you like it or not, and Dem will always be one of them. Any 3rd party will just give power to Republicans.

We might have a two-party system, but Democrats and Republicans haven’t always been the two parties. Strategic voting is not “giving up”, nor is support organizations other than the DNC and RNC. You sound quite out of touch with reality.

Plus, two-party systems are generally the result of FPtP voting, and there are a number of better voting systems* being used in elections across the country and under those systems even voting for a 3rd party doesn’t “give power to Republicans”.

*: Basically every voting system is better thatn FPtP, but a cloneproof Condorcet methods eliminate the traditional spoiler effect of a 3rd party on it’s most closely aligned major party.

How are you going to say I’m out of touch with reality then jump into a fantasy world where we somehow have a different voting system than we do? Unless you’re in a very specific region (Alaska for instance) it is all FPTP and all 2 party system.

Third parties will only work in some districts. They are almost always spoilers, though. And acting like it is anything else is playing perfectly into the Republicans hands.

Fact is, you say DNC and RNC haven’t always been the 2 parties, but it has been this way an incredibly long time. It is not changing. What has changed over time is the beliefs of the parties.

Only realistic option is to vote for the democrats that represent what you want and hope enough will get elected that they can reshape the party.

Yes, I was curious to how much was ‘sour grapes’’ -that she did not have the maturity, or dedication to democracy, to at the very least just shut her stupid mouth- or she is simply pro radical Zionist. It could be a combination of both. I hope the democratic party permanently 86’s her from the party, as there is plenty of room in the republican party for fragile ego’s; egos that prefer retribution for bring defeated, to the good of the people of their own country. She is a spectacular, POS.

I get it was a bitter primary. I get she has strong feelings about certain foreign policy issues.

But holy shit, she will be unwelcomed anywhere in Democratic politics forever with this BS. If El-Sayed wins, maybe people will forget in a few years. But if he narrowly loses, she will be a pariah forever. Has she deluded herself into thinking everyone will still talk to her and this will be just a minor point of disagreement they just avoid in their chats?

And it will surprise nobody that she’ll go independent and make friends with all the right wing fascists just like John Fetterman. It’s all about her and the attention she’s going to get from it.

Her political career will be fine. She can always run as a Republican.

But also, her standing in the Democratic Party might be fine, too. Don’t underestimate how much they want to put the even vaguely leftists into their place, or how afraid they are of having all of these Muslims on their ballots.

She was just doing a weird ass interview on CNN a few days ago claiming she differed from her Zionist husband and would be voting for the Dem candidate. Now this.

How anyone could trust Haley Stevens to keep her word, much less represent the state of MI in DC, is beyond me.

Just move to Tel Aviv already if you love Israel so much you pathetic rube.
