Great success to the worst instance.
is over 9000!!!
RIP kbin.social
You were my first.
What happen
somebody set us up the bomb.
*set up us
The guy running it had some health issues and couldn’t maintain it anymore, as I recall.
Same!
I wonder if the Jehovah’s witnesses are excited like this when they get a good number of members. /s
I mean, you are on a platform named after an animal that’s famous for wandering off cliffs because they blindly follow the herd¹
Make of that what you will
¹ I know it’s a myth but still
Actually the platform is Lemmy, not lemmings :)
It’s named after an animal who liked to gamble - they win some lose some it’s all the same to them
We’re all going to heaven, the prophecy was about Lemmy it turns out
Only up to 144,000.
that’s a clear mistranslation in the bibble. 144,000 is how many sexes god has
I prefer a Lemmy instance that doesn’t censor.
Same
Turns out federation is a moot point when everyone is in the same server and everywhere else is de-federated anyway because people, mods and instance admins cannot behave.
Its a shame I miss when I used to be able to interact with users from other instances.
Are the two of us not on different instances? I might not understand what I thought I did.
You are. You understand.
The real issue is where the communities are, rather than the users. Smaller instances can’t easily attract large communities of people from outside their own, so the larger instances get to run the main communities for everyone. It’s working as intended but it’s all in the numbers.
A lot of the federation links were set up years ago, so I wonder if anyone is even activily trying to federate, like we used to when it all began.
Like, the NSFW instance went down some years ago, and I don’t think anyone from the instance I’m using has bothered federating with a new one with that kind of content, or at least it doesn’t pop up anymore. Which is fine, so I also don’t bother, but for a newcomer it might seem odd that some instances have more connections than others and such.
Just federate yourself, the new one is https://fedinsfw.app/
When I click on this link it just opens the instance in my browser.
You have to subscribe to a community from your instance
So lemmy get this right, if I personally subscribe to !titties@fedinsfw.app then all users on my instance will eventually have that instance in their all feed?
I believe legitimately yes though I’m not super positive. I just see it scroll across my all feed already.
I get lots of content from other instances and when I search for communities I see all the instances that such-and-such community? If you have spent any time online you know that large != good community. Yes some are defed’ but that’s fine by me.
define behave.
because according to chunks of lemmy userbase my non-murderous and not extremist views are hostile and akin to being a pedophile nazi grandma rapist.
just owning a car or owning a playstation/nintendo here is unforgivable sin.
I agree, it’s sad what has become of db0.
Agreed.
Context?
Anything about piracy is blocked, as well as other content. I’m all for moderation, but I’m against censorship.
What have I missed? I signed up for the piracy friendly perspective - https://lemmy.dbzer0.com/c/piracy is still here?
.world has that community blocked.
Yeah you’re on the ‘anarchist’ instance. Lemmy.world users can’t see the piracy community at all I think. Pretty sure they blocked it. At the very least, there used to be a piracy community on lemmy.world as well but it got banned and deleted.
Damn… Looks like I gotta move my account from World.
Oh sorry! I somehow read your comment as if /c/piracy@dbzer0 had closed down piracy and generally started to censor the instance. Don’t ask how misread ?/_-
I think it’s OK to have specific instances ban certain stuff especially piracy. Those issues concern legal things and risking a general lemmy instance which is fairly large is not worth it. Those things are better put on a dedicated instance that will be tolerant to legal problems. Same rules don’t have to apply to all lemmy instances, each lemmy instance is better with their own set of rules or identities.
Yeah, choke on that billionaire corporate dick real good like you’re supposed to. Good boy
Chill. You don’t have to agree with what someone is saying but no need to be a douche.
The whole point of instances is that they can alk have their own rules and you can pick another one if you’re not happy.
Like when they told someone I know to stop posting a retort to one user who signed all of their comments that they couldn’t be trained for AI.
Because that sounds like censorship.

tankie who’s upset that .ml users can’t spread pro north korea shit
Wtf man. Fuck North Korea, and any other propaganda. I’m worried about censoring piracy related content mostly. I don’t even know .ml, I’m from .db0.
Speaking about propaganda and fake news, you’re the one jumping to wrong conclusions and thus spread misinformation. You didn’t even bother to check which instance I’m from. You’re such a massive hypocrite.

.World mods will ban you for debunking disproven pro West propaganda.
Nonconfrontational… Interesting choice of a name for you.
Thanks :)
.ml mods will ban you for criticizing 1980s GOP
Uhh, what?
A mod said modern average dems are to the right of 80s average GOP. I mentioned a few of the many horrors 80s gop started… my comment got deleted and I got banned.
Wild
Have any good suggestions for a decent non-tankie instance that doesn’t censor and allows downvoting? I’m only on .world out of laziness.
.zip leaves it to the user to block what they want and it doesn’t have a habit of defederating.
sh.itjust.works
I started on .world and tried a couple instances before I settled happily with lemmy.today
No complaints here about lemmy.today :)
Dbzer0, which is focused on piracy and for autism/ADHD spectrum, pro lgbtq and pro trans. It is blocked by .world.
I think I just found my new home. Thank you.
No, .world does not block dbzer0, only its piracy community
.ml
.ml admins delete comments and give out instance bans for saying the wrong opinion.
Racist opinions?
removed
Go back to reddit.
If we are honest, we all wished you would go back to reddit

😎
Back at ya, buddy. Authoritarian bootlickers don’t belong on leftist platforms. Go away.
Hahaha lemmy.world is not a leftist platform. It’s very pro capitalist and pro democratic party.

I haven’t been on reddit in half a decade, wbu?

Isn’t the idea to decentralize?
We are decentralized, according to FediDB, the Fediverse has 14.2 million accounts. Lemmy+Piefed+Mbin have 551k users. Obviously we could be better spread out, but the fact that there’s no instance at 50% share is already pretty nice.
And if a big instance enshittified, it would be drastically easier for everyone to leave it compared to convincing people to leave Reddit or something. You just export/import your user settings and you get to keep the communities you’ve subscribed to and block, and the users you’ve blocked.
Lemmy.world has enshitified. People still won’t leave. We should be encouraging migration, not saying “it’s good enough.”
deleted by creator
Good thing no one is over 50% then?
Re-read, bud.
Learn to read.

No. The idea is to have the constant looming threat of decentralization to keep the centralized system in check.
No, it isn’t. People will refuse to leave, just as we’ve seen with FB, Reddit, etc. Lemmy.world has already enshitified from where it started, and from the position of nearly every other instance, yet people like you are still there. That’s proof against your argument.
I haven’t noticed it getting worse. 🤷
Mutually assured enshittification
Except in this there’s really not a lot of benefit when it comes to centralization so it would be better to decentralize to make sure no single instance becomes too big. I’d say world is already a bit too big because 90% of my subscribed feeds would be gone if world no longer federated with Piefed. World has significant sway on our side of the fediverse because smaller instances will probably feel dead (or turn into an echo chamber) if world won’t federate with them.
All those users are from different instances. That’s decentralized.
If this community goes down or is otherwise not viable anymore, users can easily find another, similar community, while not having to switch to a different platform or instance or whatever themselves. That’s how this is supposed to work.
Decentralization with different larger communities on different instances, with community members from all kinds of different instances, baby!
It only works if you can bring your block list with you. That’s the only thing of value attached to my profile.
Settings -> scroll down to Import/Export Settings, click the Export button, repeat with Import in the new account, works even across Lemmy -> PieFed or PyLova.
You can, it’s easy and quick. I just exported my profile settings (builtin to the default lemmy.world web UI) to a json file in a couple seconds. Confirmed it contains blocked users and communities.
Well thank god for that!
Precisely! What’s the point of an overpopulated instance? It’s more likely to affect users because of blanket instance blocklists.
I came here after lemmy.ml said it was shutting down. Idk what happened a with that but world seemed stable enough to not have that problem
.ml shutting down? That’s the devs server unlikely it will shut down unless for maintenence
the instance I was on straight up, said that it was shutting down, and that we should migrate to other instances. I did that and dropped the other account so I have no fucking clue what’s going on over there.
Must have been another instance. Lemmy.ml is not shutting down.
actual question: How is Lemmy.ml functionally different than Lemmy.world?
.ml has a lot of pro-Russia, pro-China types and criticism of either country can lead to a quick ban.
Functionally, there is no difference. Both run the same software, tho the versions may slightly differ as the devs, who run .ml, push updates.
For a functionally different experience try Mbin/Kbin (I forget which is the current), or Piefed. Piefed is similar to Lemmy with some quality of life improvements. Kbin/Mbin is a cross between “tweet” style posts, “blog” style posts like tumblr, and Reddit type posts.
Ok, I get it that there are pro-China guys, plenty of Russian regime fans around as well. But the thing that really caught me by surprise is that there are seriously people entirely serious about how North Korea is heaven earth.
Can’t enshittify if you have no services in the first place
From my experience, people in .world are way more open to positive discussion than .ml. Everything upsets .ml if you say the wrong thing or dont post the right way, to make them understand. Its to much fucking drama for no reason.
No that’s stupid and you’re stupid but Lenin is cool
.world is doing its best to replicate every bad thing about reddit (starting with powermods) while avoiding every positive aspect it might have once had. I’m sure its admins have constant wet dreams about the day they can go public and sell it for parts.
.ml is trying to pretend it’s not lemmygrad by putting on glasses with a fake nose and a moustache.
Both are toxic and harmful to the fediverse.
Similar things can be said of most other “big” instances to a lesser extent (including the one I’m in, but I’m too lazy to move out for a third time).
Frankly, the only instance I’d trust to not be politically compromised is fedinsfw, and I already got bit once by lemmynsfw’s incompetent management (when they lost control of it to a rogue admin and it closed for months), so I’m not going back there.
Next time I have to move I’ll be rolling my own private instance, or quitting altogether.
You might try one of the .zips. Very competent admins who defederate from next to nothing, leaving the choice up to the user (mainly as opt-in blocks, with just ~3 opt-out ones iirc).
If you roll your own though then probably PieFed/PyLova would be much easier than Lemmy to deploy and manage.
Regardless of how the most controversial communities on Lemmy.world decide to be, it’s good to spread out and decentralize.
You speak the true true as evident by looking at the mod logs
ML was run by the Lemmy frontend maintainers who drain the blood of puppies for sustenance and wish to kill you slowly and painfully as a source of income.
How are you so unable to use your brain?
The function and idea of decentralisation isn’t to evenly distribute users across every instance, some instances being much larger than others is and extremely obvious thing.I’m part of discuss.tchncs.de, more or less by accident. I just stumbled across that one when I wanted to make an account.
For real, do they want the Fediverse to turn into a shitshow like email?
it’s almost inevitable, no one cares about decentralisation
Decentralized networks with large centralized communities is the best approach. You have to have that number of people to have interesting conversations and engagement.
But if all the users are spread out across several instances it becomes more resilient. If a large community/instance goes offline or there’s a controversy then it can be migrated to a new instance
I vaguely know what an instance is, but let me see if I can get this straight.
So an instance in the Fediverse is a website hosted either on a web hosting service, right? So it’s like if I wanted to start one, it’d be similar to starting an old fashion forum like phpBB? I’d buy a domain, get a webhosting service, and install the software?
And the communities are analogous to sub forums? Except instead of me creating them, the users on my forum would create them?
Yep that’s basically it
I might start one then. I ran a couple of forums back in the 2000s. They were more barren than the Saharan desert, but I did it.
It’s good to have it as an option but most people are frustrated if they can’t just go to one place that has tons of people.
16,666 dozen
See? Dozens of us! Dozens!

I like being grouped in 12s lol
Dozens of dozens of dozens of dozen
Only 9.66 dozens of dozen of dozen
The minimum ‘dozens’ is 2x12, I would think. So dozens of dozens of dozens is at least 24x24x24=13,824. That many dozen is 13,824x12 = 165,888. So I think dozens of dozens of dozens of dozen is right for 200,000.
What have I got wrong?I don’t know that you did anything wrong. This is all too gross for me.
🙌🙌🙌
gratz
Defederated from .ml and watch those number go even higher.
I can now say I’ve officially joined the .world party, after the craziness from my last post getting deleted, im officially done with them. i might even delete all my other post i did in .ml, those guys are fucking ridiculous for no reason.
.world supports .ml, so…. There’s that.
Even so, my interactions there are way better than .ml. ill take that anyday
Who else are they supposed to obsess over if they do that?

I convinced a few of my friends to leave reddit and move onto to here. I’M DOING MY PART!
Should have chosen Piefed.
Let’s go Lemmy! It’s nice to see this platform grow. Whether by taking in people from corpo social media platforms or just by people discovering that it’s actually a safe neat little place to exist.
Keep the Lemmings coming please 💜I decided to drop Reddit recently, it’s an ugly husk of what it once was.
I typed into Google “Reddit alternatives” and funnily enough, it was from a Reddit post that I learned about Sumit and Lemmy.World.
Lemmy.world is very search engine friendly. If you add lemmy to your search, it will usually surface lemmy world
Thank you for the tip
I’m a recent convert. Got banned by Reddit mods, like globally for an anti ICE comment. I called them brownshirts.
A lot of people have been banned for similar reasons around the DOGE crackdown. The smallest comment would trigger a ban for “inciting violence.”
Lemmy kind of maintained by really really really terrible people, though. Better off on a different fediverse frontend.
I think that’s a personal preference. From what I’ve heard, the devs used to be tankies (fuck those), other devs distanced themselves (I think?), tankies made Lemmy.ml (you can tell by the amount of bullshit on there, lol), some instances defederated from it (good) and now…I think we just go on? Idk, I’m probably completely wrong about that, please correct me. Anyway, fuck tankies.
I really like Lemmy. I probably won’t leave. Sure, Mastodon works ig, but I’m not a Twitter person. I much prefer the Reddit-style…style of Lemmy. So, forgive me for this, but I’m staying.
I see, I was wrong. Checking the Lemmy repository, it seems that nutomic and dessalines still work on it. And yeah, these are hardcore tankies that I strongly disagree with.
With that said, these people run lemmy.ml. I’m not on lemmy.ml. I really don’t think they can influence me in any way, cause of how Lemmy works. The first thing I do when signing up is block Yogthos, lemmy.ml, all communism communities and the lemmy.ml instance. So…don’t judge me for this, but I’m staying, even tho I disagree with the devs. I mean fuck, Elon Musk being human trash doesn’t stop people from using Twitter and I bet way more people use Twitter than there are Lemmy users.
I slept 5 hours last night and I’m dead (suffering from relationship success) :P
If anything that I type doesn’t make sense, please correct me!
Doesn’t all of lemmy only have 60k weekly users though? I thought I just read that.
40k though
We just recently fell below 30K, as the Fediverse Observer site crapped out.
We held 40K for a long time, down from 65K at the peak, but our decline in active users continues, despite all that Reddit continues to do to piss off their userbase.
And it’s monthly, not weekly.
It will grow exponentially, though, Reddi’s latest update removed the r/all sub and its pissed off a heck of a lot of users.
Imo it doesn’t even deserve to have consumers anymore, it’s basically a Facebook newsfeed now, merely without a friends list.
I’m here because they restricted old.reddit to only logged in users for “security reasons.” The only time I log in is when I’m truly motivated to post something. Forcing me into their obnoxiously large, ad filled hamster wheel of scrolling when I just want to browse efficiently was the last straw.
That’s fair enough, I don’t blame you. The weird thing about that having to be logged in thing, is that as soon as I deleted the app; voila, you can browse posts from Google results, even up-vote and pressumedly comment, without even being logged in. What a predatory app.
I kinda miss when forums had a dedicated politics board, hell i miss boards in general which is why i still use sites like Whirlpool. Forums were better
It will grow exponentially
It made a huge jump in 2023 and is mostly declining since then. Unfortunately fediverse observer shut down.
That’s a shame to hear… either way, I’m just glad to be off of Reddit. I wasn’t banned, just began to hate it with a passion.
